First print off the paper pattern and cut out. You will now have a 4″ circle, you will use this to trace your design onto craft felt.
Trace the circle onto craft felt.
Cut out your circles. You have the choice to cut either 2 circles the same size, that will be sewn up with a blanket stitch. Or cut one circle smaller with either regular scissors or pinking shears and you can use either a straight stitch or a blanket stitch depending on how you want the final design to look.
There is a lot of versatility with this pattern and don’t be afraid to experiment since these ornaments are quick to make and you can also make more.
Cut out a peice of heat transfer vinyl and place is plastic side down onto your cutting mat.
Create the name that you want to cut out with vinyl. Make sure it is smaller the the smallest circle so make sure to measure your circle first if you cut it smaller.
On the next page you will see how the text will print off. Make sure to push mirror so that it cuts in backwards.
On the next page you will have the chance to select your material setting and the screen will give you instructions on which tool to load. You can also select mirror here if you missed it on the previous screen.
When your mat is loaded and you are ready press the blinking “C” button on your cutting machine.
Weed your vinyl so all the extra vinyl is removed.
Now centre the text onto the front piece of felt.
Iron your heat transfer vinyl according to the manufacturers instructions. I recommend using a piece of teflon ironing paper and and ironing mat.
When the design is cooled, peel away the plastic front.
Pin your front piece to the back piece so it is centred.
Seperate two strands of embroidery floss from the larger floss cord and thread onto an embroidery needle. You can cut the strand around 35″ long and you should be able to sew the entire round with one peice, just make sure to be careful of tangles.
First make a knot in the end of the thread and pull it through the back of the front piece and it will hide between the two layers.
Cut a piece of grossgrain ribbon around 9″ and fold over to resemble the photo below.
Pin the ribbon into the center of the top of the round.
Place a couple of stitches either vertically or horizontally to hold the ribbon in place. If you do vertical, make sure to sew the edges and centre.
Sew around the circumference of the ornament either using a straight stitch or a blanket stitch, your choice. A straight stitch looks nice with the pinking shear edge and blanket stitch looks nice with a straight edge.
Sew around the edge until there is around 1.5″ left. Now leave this open and insert a bit of stuffing. You don’t need much, just enough to give it some bulk.
Now continue sewing till your reach the ribbon. Sew a few stitches in place to finish the thread and cut the thread and tuck the end inside between the layers to hide the end.
Here is the final design ready to be hung on your Christmas tree.
