Color combinations
When making up these felt sugar cookies I recomend a beige color for the cookie base. But for the frosting layer don’t be afraid to get creative. Use any color including white for the frosting and you can use thread to create the sprinkles or some seed beads to add some glitz.
First print off the paper pattern and cut out. You will now have two candy cane shapes to trace your design.
Trace the outline of the large candy cane shape onto a beige craft felt. Flip the design and then trace a second piece. This is so can put the two sides that may have some residual markings face side together on the inside to hide any ink. Make sure to trace onto the back side of the felt, if one side is nicer than the other.
Trace the smaller candy cane onto the color you would like to have as your frosting.
Take two strands from a strand of embroidery thread and thread it onto an embroidery needle. Knot the end and pass it through the back side of the frosting piece. The back side will be the side with any tracing marks from the marker.
Now use a straight stitch and bring the thread up and down randomly on the top. Then switch colors as many times as you like to create a candy sprinkle effect.
Here is the finish frosting piece with the sprinkles. You can also just use one color if you prefer.
Pin the frosting piece onto the front (the side you traced on is the back side).
Take two strands of embroidery thread the same color as the frosting and thread through a needle and knot the end. Now bring the thread up threw the back so the knot is hidden.
Sew the frosting piece to the top sugar cookie piece with a straight stitch all along the edge. Finish by sewing over the last stitch a few times to hold the thread in place and hide the end behind the top layer.
Pin the top sugar cookie piece to the bottom sugar cookie piece.
Cut a piece of grossgrain ribbon to around 9 inches or what you prefer. And loop it to resemble the picture below.
Remove the top straight pin from the assembled felt sugar cookie and now tuck the grossgrain ribbon between the top and bottom cookie layer. Place the straight pin back to hold this all in place while you sew.
Take two strands of embroidery thread in a color that matches the sugar cookie color and thread a embroidery needle and knot the end.
Thread back to front through the top layer so the know will be hidden between the two layers.
Straight stich a few times through all the layers and the grossgrain ribbon to hold the ribbon in place.
Continue around the edge with a blanket stitch.
Leave a 1.5″ opening and place a small amount of stuffing into the felt ornament, it doesn’t need much.
Continue with the blanket stitch till you return to the begining and stitch over the last stitch a few times to hold the thread in place. Pull the needle in the ornament and out again and snip the end of the thread. This will hide the end inside the ornament.
Here is your finished felt ornament. Have fun making lots of these to decorate your Christmas tree.
