Color combinations
When making up these Christmas tree felt ornaments don’t be afraid to get creative. Use any color for the base and you can use a monochromatic color scheme for the sequins or use a mix of colors. You can also use a white, matching, or contrasting thread for the blanket stitch around the edge. There are so many color combinations to come up with.
Trace the outline of the tree onto craft felt. Flip the design so that you mirror the image, and then trace a second piece. This is so can put the two sides that may have some residual markings face side together on the inside to hide any ink. Make sure to trace onto the back side of the felt, if one side is nicer than the other.
Here are the two mirroring pieces.
Take two strands from a strand of embroidery thread and thread it onto an embroidery needle. Knot the end and pass it through the back side of the felt. The back side will be the side with any tracing marks from the marker.
You can use as many or few sequins as you like but I used 16, 4 of each color in this tutorial.
Bring the needle up threw the back of the sequin cup and then bring the needle back down just along the side of the sequin to make your first stitch.
Bring the thread back up threw the center of the sequin and down on the other side to resemble the image below.
Do this with all remaining sequins of the same color. When you are finished sew the thread back on itself picking up a bit of felt from the back of the design. Do 2 or 3 stitches to hold the end in place and cut the thread.
Here is the finished front with the 16 sequins sewn in place.
Place the top piece ontop of the bottom piece and pin to hold them together.
Cut a piece of grossgrain ribbon to around 9 inches or what you prefer. And loop it to resemble the picture below.
Remove the top straight pin from the assembled felt tree and now tuck the grossgrain ribbon between the top and bottom layer. Place the straight pin back to hold this all in place while you sew.
Take two strands of embroidery thread and thread a embroidery needle and knot the end.
Thread back to front through the top layer so the know will be hidden between the two layers.
Straight stich a few times through all the layers and across the grossgrain ribbon to hold the ribbon in place.
Continue around the edge with a blanket stitch and leave around 1.5″ open near the end for stuffing.
Place a small amount of filling into the tree and continue with the blanket stitch to close.
Sew over the last stitch a few times to hold the thread in place.
Pull the needle threw the center of the tree and up through the back and snip. This will hide the end inside the tree.
Here is your finished felt ornament. Have fun making lots of these to decorate your Christmas tree.
