Why are Acrylic keychains so great?
They are easy to make. It just takes a few steps and you have a totally customized keychain.
It’s easy to find the materials. You can find lots of different shapes of acrylic keychains on Amazon not just circles. There are also hearts, ovals and squares. You can also get the permanent adhesive vinyl on amazon so you can get everything you need in one order and have it shipped to your door.
You can make many at the same time. Once you get the hang of making them you can work assembly line style.
They are a popular gift. You can change the designs and colors easily to match each holiday or occasion.
Great way to use up scrap vinyl. Because they are so small you can use scrap vinyl to create this project.
Select “Upload Image” button and you will probably find the SVG file in your downloads section.
Now you will see the SVG file in “Recent Uploads” section. Select it and press the green “Add to Canvas” button.
Step 3
Now you will see the 12 design files. I recommend working on one at a time. Press the ungroup button so you could work one design at a time. Now either turn off or delete the designs you don’t want.
Step 4
Once you are happy with the design press the green “Make it” button in the top right button.
Step 5
In the “Prepare” screen you will see where your vinyl will cut on your mat. When you are satisfied press the green “Continue” button in the botton right corner. Cut the vinyl using the green standard mat.
Step 6
Change you material settings to what you desire. I am using “Premium Vinyl” and using the “Fine-Point Blade”.
Step 7
Place the vinyl on a green standard mat. I recommend just using a peice of vinyl slightly larger than the project.
Step 8
Weed the vinyl to remove the negative space.
Step 9
Cut a peice of transfer tape slightly larger than your design and apply it to the vinyl.
Step 10
Remove the plastic protective layer from the acrylic keychain, just on one side not both. Use a bit of isopropyl alcohol to help get rid of any dirt or fingermarks before applying the vinyl.
Step 11
Now place the design onto the acrylic keychain. You may need to rotate it so that the hole on top does not have any vinly blocking it. Slowely pull back the transfer tape to leave the vinyl.
Step 12
You can leave the design as is, but if you want a colorful design simply create a 4.95 cm circle in Design space and cut it out with a complimentary color vinyl. I’m going to use white as my background. Now make sure to clean the surface again with rubbing alcohol because little specks of dust can already be there, and apply the vinyl in the same way.
Adding a background can work for some but not all designs. Below you can see on the left that it leaves a halo around the dots. But on the right it looks great because the stripes are closer together.
Step 13
Use an awl or other pointy object and punction through the center of the hole. This will push the vinyl through the hole to leave a smooth surface to attach the keychain to.
Step 14
Now select the same circle that you used to cut the background and change it to “Guide” in the “Operations” panel.
Now you can use this as a guide for designing your text.
Step 15
Use the guide to place your custom text. Than turn off the guide and press the green “Make it” button in the top left.
Cut out this layer the same as the other vinyl layers.
Step 16
Peel off the other side of the acrylic keychain and clean it with rubbing alcohol. Now using the same steps as the other vinyl layers, center the text and apply it to the front of the keychain.
If you want to protect your design you can can out a circle of clear vinyl and apply it over the front.
Step 17
Now open the the bottom of the keychain using flat nose jewelry pliers. Loop it through the hole and then close the link.
Step 18
Now open up the top link in the keychain and attach the tassle that came with the acrylic keychain kit.
All done!
Now your keychain is complete and know you know how to make your very own customized keychains for gifts and holidays.
